Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today expressed his grief over the loss of lives when 13 coaches of the Howrah-Kurla Gyaneshwari Express derailed in West Bengal this morning and a goods train rammed into three of the derailed boogies.
Officials in the Prime Minister’s Office said Dr Singh had asked the Railway and other authorities to ensure that all assistance was provided to the bereaved families, the injured and other passengers.
The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia assistance of Rs 2 lakhs to the next of kin of each of those killed in the incident and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured, the officials added.
